Schumer plans classified briefing for US senators on chips, technology

Senate Democratic Chief Chuck Schumer has scheduled an all-senators classified briefing on worldwide innovation and a proposed invoice to increase U.S. semiconductor production, according to his business office.

Senate Republican Chief Mitch McConnell has now threatened to block the monthly bill that would give $52 billion to subsidize U.S. semiconductor production and boost U.S. competitiveness with China if Democrats transfer ahead with a social paying out and weather invoice.

The briefing is planned for Wednesday.

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre reported Wednesday the Biden administration wants Congress to transfer promptly, noting Intel Corp announced it will spend $20 billion to open semiconductor factories in Ohio “and that could grow to as substantially as $100 billion” if Congress passes chips subsidies.

The Senate legislation, passed in June 2021, bundled $52 billion for chips subsidies and licensed another $200 billion to strengthen U.S. scientific and technological innovation to compete with China.
